Project Details
The Groves spans the River Dee bank from the Old Dee Bridge to Grosvenor Park. This south-facing area features tree-lined paths and attracts visitors seeking relaxation, boat trips, dining, and drinks. Local artists display work beneath the medieval wall section that runs along part of the area./p>
The Edwardian bandstand hosts brass bands and choirs throughout summer afternoons. Benches surround the structure for visitors to sit while listening to music. The area serves as a departure point for River Dee boat trips during summer months, with small boats available for rent nearby.
Historical structures mark The Groves area. The Queen's Park suspension bridge (built 1852, rebuilt 1923) shows shields of Chester's seven Norman earls on its towers. The stone Old Dee Bridge dates to the 14th century, replacing earlier wooden structures. The 11th-century weir attracts canoeists and bird-watchers. All sites sit within short walking distance of Chester's walls, Grosvenor Park, and Roman Gardens.
